API Highlight - Spool Page Extraction - SFAEXTR

Have you ever needed to print a specific page or pages from one of your spooled files?
You probably found that IBM does not make it easy to select just those pages for printing. The SpoolFlex Extraction API (SFAEXTR), which is included in the SpoolFlex Advanced Utilities, may be just what you need. The API lets you select which spooled file to search through and what search criteria to use for page selection. It will search through the spooled files and will select out pages that only meet the selection criteria. The search would result in a new spooled file that you can use for printing or converting to PDF.

Pam, at Marinette County in Wisconsin, uses the extraction tool to avoid mailing Billing Statements back to county employees. ”Due to the nature of our clientele, some of the Billing Statements are sent to an internal social worker instead of directly to the client. Every month we were printing the statement on custom self-sealing mailers, and then paying postage to mail the statements to ourselves,” Pam said. Using SFAEXTR, they were able to pull statements containing certain search criteria, and e-mail the statements to appropriate workers. “This saves roughly $1.00 per statement, per billing cycle, per impacted client,” Pam said. Problem solved, and money and time saved.

If you would like more information about the Extraction API, please call our tech support team at 866-378-3366 or (678) 417-1521 and someone will be happy to address all your questions.

Answers to your Questions

  • Q: I am creating a form which will be used by all of our hospitals. Is there a way to have a variable field for the hospital name?
A: FormFlex allows you to create a data map definition in which you can map a field and store its value in the definition. You can then use FormFlex commands SDMOVE, SDCOPY, and SDDELT to move, copy and suppress the spool data respectively.

  • Q: Can I use SpoolFlex/FormFlex commands in my CL program?
A: You can use SpoolFlex/FormFlex commands in your CL program.

  • Q: What are width and length limitations that SpoolFlex has for converting to PDF or Excel?
A: SpoolFlex does not have any limitations, but IBM limits a spooled file to 378 characters wide. Versions of Excel older than 2007 have a limit of 65,000 rows. With Excel 2007, the limit has been raised to over 1 million rows.
